Joe Hendrick is a multimedia artist with a background in architecture, fine art, commercial illustration, mixed media, installation and performance art.
Mr. Hendrick was an Associate Professor of Art at Monroe Community College where he taught a variety of art courses for 35 years before retiring in 2005. Mr. Hendrick also taught at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, Oswego Summer Art Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester City School District and Aesthetic Education Institute.
Mr. Hendrick has exhibited his work in many galleries and museums such as: Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York; Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY; American Federation of Art, NYC; Playboy Gallery, Chicago, Ill.; Public Image, NYC; Pyramid Arts Center, Rochester, NY; Dawson Art Gallery, Rochester, NY; Mercer Gallery, Rochester, NY; Wells College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Albany Institute of History and Art, Rice Gallery; JFK Library/Gallery; Kim Foster Gallery, NYC; American Consulate, Iran, Pakistan; Hudson Valley International; US Fine Arts Registry, NYC; National Design Center; Pollack Gallery, Toronto, Ont.
Joe Hendricks art has appeared on book covers, album covers, and pages in Playboy Magazine. He has illustrated children’s books, poetry books, posters, annual reports, text books, some of which include: The Role and Status of Women in the Soviet Union, Columbia University Press; Martin Buber and the Theatre, Minerva Press; Marcel Proust, Funk and Wagnell; The Wonderful Wings of Harold Harrabescu, Dell Publishing, selected “Book of the Month” by the Junior Literary Guild; Ambiance, Marion McPartland; The Great Railway Bazaar, Paul Theroux; War of the Worlds by Orson Wells, Houghton Mifflin, etc. Hendricks multimedia installations have been exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery, Pyramid Art Center, Mercer Gallery, The Window Project, Merce Cunningham Studio, Writers and Books, Kate Gleason Theatre. Hendrick has also performed with the New Beat Poetry Project; Mr. Marshmallow’s “Origin of Man’ and the Hendrick Dance Project.
Joe Hendrick was a founding member of the Pyramid Art Center, New Beat Poetry Project, and SCORE, the Surrealist Club of Rochester and Europe. Founder of Mercer Gallery, Monroe Community College; Founder of The Little Theatre Gallery, Rochester, NY; Founder of 4 Walls Gallery, Rochester, NY. Hendrick has served as a juror and panel member for the New York Foundation of the Arts, The Rochester Arts Council and the Scholastic Art Awards.
Hendrick’s cast stone sculptures for School #7, Rochester, NY were selected by the Smithsonian Institute as a significant public sculpture to be maintained by the institute. Mr. Hendrick has received many awards some of which include: Ida Abrams Louis Award for “Outstanding creative accomplishment”; four gold metals for “outstanding work in the field of illustration. Award of Excellence, Chicago Society of Graphic Arts, etc. In 1994, Joe and his daughter, Colleen, are recipients of the University of Rochester’s Lillian Fairchild award for “outstanding creative accomplishment.”
