作家情報 Artist Information

born in Nishimuro-gun, Wakayama prefecture.
Kinokuni "Kumano," inscribed on the World Heritage List, is a mystic place where old roads called "Kumanokodo" for people to visit shrines are laid, and gods have been found in nature since ancient times. The religion in Kumano has taken on the old Japanese individual form of nature-worship fused with Buddhism. Facing such various aspects of nature, she spent her childhood in Nishimuro-gun, Wakayama.

Then, Sakaki moved her base of life to Tokyo; she graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo Zokei University in 2010, and completed postgraduate studies (M.F.A) at the university in 2012.
She had solo or group exhibitions mainly at domestic and overseas galleries. While her activities extended from paintings to artworks in various expressive media and participation in many projects, she formed a creative unit called "S+N laboratory (Kimi Sakaki + Masashi Nishizono) " in 2012. Activities of the unit vary from workshops to projects, collaborations, art supports, and art school.

Artist Statement:

I was born in "Kumano," Wakayama prefecture, and spent years there - a place where various forms of "believe," such as Buddhism and nature-worship, fuse together. Thinking it valuable that I feel interested in such roots or identity of myself, I'd like to try art making.
While making paintings with a theme of children as a main feature of my career, I use a sense or symbolic form particular to Japan to try various expressive media of art, from photography, print, video, and sculpture work to spatial expressions, like installation work created by combining these art media. And, besides "children," my work is characteristic in often using "mask," "mirror," "clothes," and "pattern" as a subject matter.

Haven't you felt realistic about, or attracted to, something like a virtual image or illusionary expression? For example, we are often attracted to the world of picture book or a story. I think that's because the world has obtained "an expanse" according to a viewer's range of vision. What I do for viewers is to create a small world that I capture with a cynical viewpoint through my own eyes.
'I make artwork toward "someone" and hope it can exist in "someone's" sensibility.' - My work is not an answer, but a question from me.
