Land of Paul Gauguin Meets “Kanaky”
In 1972, Philippe Lallut as “Kanaky” was born in New Caledonia.
His artistic talent was recognized when he was 14 with an opening of his own sticker company. As he started traveling the world, he also started to putt materials on wall of street to create his art. This traveling experience influenced his surf art. Now, Kanaky living and producing art in Tahiti the place great master pieces of Paul Gauguin were created.
“Kanaky Art” born from world travel
Since 1986, as he started create his art work, his expression appears on paper, wood board, streets wall and as far as on waste materials. He voices surf, streets, pop culture and south pacific primitive culture with variation of images. When he was traveling city of Kamakura, he thought how to add his own identity into Japan. Then he came up an idea of sticking his surf motif stickers on a red traditional post box, an icon image of his Japan trip. In fact, “TOKYO FANTASMS” has been created with both Japan icon and Kanaky’s identity.
Tahitian Art voices to the World
In 2014, overall, Kanaky wishes to give relaxed feeling in his south pacific art works. He says he tries to create image as simple as possible and believes simple image can carry the strongest message. He wants to challenge creating his art that something like people never saw before.
